In June 1863 Robert E. Lee and his Confederate troops set out for the North to strike Pennsylvania. Lee was hoping to defeat the Union on northern soil and to have a definite blow on the Union's confidence.
The Union and Confederate armies collided unexpectedly in the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in July. For three days they battled. But the Confederate army was doomed on July 3rd when the climax of the battle occurred. The frontal assault, Pickett's Charge, shattered Robert E. Lee's hope for invincibility.
Many believe that the Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the war.
Even though this lose put Lee in a bad position he is still the most respected Confederate army general and is famous for his "against the odds" successes.
